After cutting, the surface layer of the sample is deformed. The next stages of sample preparation are operations to remove the deformed layer - grinding and polishing. The first step of grinding is to bring out the plane of the surface. When hand sanding the sample must be rotated 90 degrees after each step until the cracks from the previous step are gone. With semi-automatic or automatic grinding, the change in the position of the sample is carried out by rotating the plate and sample holder.
